Vienna, the city about which Billy Idol sings "when will you realize, Vienna waits for you", was a witness of one extraordinary evening. Annemieke van Dam, another from the, seems to be neverneding, line of the Dutch actresses, is mostly known for her unique and amazing portrayal of the Kaiserin (Empress) Elisabeth of Bavaria from Elisabeth the musical. Annemieke, currently shining bright in Mary Poppins in Vienna (of course as Mary Poppins), made her solo concert debut on Monday 26th January 2015.
In the amazing intimate atmosphere of Theatercouch, lead by Annemieke's former co-star and ex-classmate Rory Six, the audience was lucky to witness another angle of musical (but not musical theatre) passion of Annemieke. The size of the place (approximately 50 seats) was made for an accoustic evening. Accompanied by Bela Fisher jr. at the piano, Annemieke presented some of her favorite music. Much to surprise of the fans, it was mostly sad songs about relationships. With little dramaturgy it could stand like a walk-through various stages of being in love to losing the love. Maybe a small tip for next concert. And lucky for me, the songs were all in English which helped me personally to feel the urgency of the emotion. For the younger audience the songs by Anouk, Jewel or Ella Fitzgerland might have not been very familiar, but I personally enjoyed it very much. I believe that majority of the fans expected a mix of musical solos and contemporary pop hits but evening with jazzy ambience was not a disappointment to anyone.
Rory, as host of the evening, was asking questions the fans submitted for Annemieke. Even with my bad knowledge of German I was able to (hopefully) understand all. So the audience learned that her dream famous husband would be Angelina Jolie (of course after her real life boyfriend Julian Looman), that her favorite musical is probably The Last 5 years. Funny was a fact that when she was asked with whom she would like to play she immediately replied Pia Douwes, completely forgetting she has already been in The 3 Musketeers in Stuttgart with her. Annemieke's devoted fans were not surprised when she mentioned that her dream musical role is Elphaba in Wicked, preferably with her best friend Wietske van Tongeren as Glinda.
My personal highlight of the evening was the song "A case of you" originally written by Joni Mitchell, known to me from the solo album of Julia Murney, who was Elpaba in Wicked on Broadway in 2006. And as an interesting coincidence, Annemieke sung also "Gravity" another song I knew from before.
Afterall, it was an amazing evening with great songs, atmosphere like home and funny stories. I wish there is another concert soon, maybe with more songs and a bit less of talking. But if there was a musical "queen of hearts" it would definately have to belong to Annemieke van Dam.
